Small things done now will be disproportionately important in decades to come.

NEXT MEETING Thursday 18 th October, 7pm at Sunnybank Hills library
Level 2 Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown
Cnr. Calam Rd. and  Compton Rd.  Sunnybank Hills

WE NEED YOUR HELP
Our best efforts to save Lake Karawatha have so far come to nought. A second meeting with Council representatives of the Non-Potable Water Project (BCC euphemism for turning the Lake into a lesion) was called because they had been less than truthful in their earlier assertion that a meeting was to take place with Dr Hero before the project proceeded.  This second get-together proved to be very fruitful in terms of agreement on a more realistic and workable assessment process and broader data collection which would help Council to better tackle the issue of climate change.

However any misconceptions we may have had that acceptable scientific procedures would be adhered to were cruelly squashed when the Council spokesman, hiding behind the dresses of Councillors who had already voted for the funding of this project, stated that the infrastructure would be put in place before the research had barely begun. This includes a permanent pipe, pumping station, holding tank and gates.  They feel confident that the water comes from overland flow because they defend the quarry owner’s claim that the aquifer had not been breached. Incidentally, when pressed for an affidavit to that effect, Council told us that this would not be possible as the man in question died four years ago.

The Council spokesman has been bandying about all sorts of figures as to how much water they can extract. If no water is to be extracted from the aquifer, a rough figure is 15 thousand cubic metres from the lake itself. Since we know that no monitoring of the end use is to be done, this water can and will be used to circumvent the efforts of the Water Commissioner. It will find its way to private lawns, sporting fields, building sites for dust suppression, median strips and gardens. And at a purchase price of 89 cents per thousand litres, the water carriers will make a killing. Therefore, we propose to open a Fund for pledges of money to buy back the Lake. Based on Council figures this should not be too costly. Your Society have voted to buy the first million litres. We want no money up front, just a pledge to help buy the remaining water and keep it in the lake. We hope it will not come to us having to activate this Fund. We want to show the level of community support. This is our biggest crisis since the Motorway proposal. PLEASE HELP
