Small things done now will be disproportionately important in decades to come.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - Thursday 19th November, 7pm at Sunnybank Hills library
Level 2 Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown
Cnr. Calam Rd. and Compton Rd. Sunnybank Hills
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
We are currently entering a significant stage of our appeal against the approval to change the rural land at Wembley Road and Illaweena Street to an industrial classification. All the experts for both sides are now preparing a joint report. The Society has been excluded from the deliberations temporarily but believes that we have provided enough information for our case to be well represented in these discussions.
The case is entering a critical phase and we are asking for your help. We have been generously supported by one of our members to date, but are now asking for your financial assistance. Our costs have included a barrister, lawyers, a town planner, experts in flora and fauna ecology, fauna behaviour and habitat needs, and a range of experts on water issues.
Rarely have we mounted a campaign such as this one. Every time this has happened in the past, society members have rallied. The best examples of this community support have been the positioning of the Motorway, the saving of Kuraby Bushlands, financial pledges which helped save the Karawatha Lake, and the many letters of support that members have contributed to our projects and objections. Most recently we have been able to generate over 1500 objections, with other networking support, to the proposed construction of townhouses and caravan demountables at the Compton Road/Acacia Road site.
Although we have been able to run a very effective case to date, some of our financial commitments are open-ended. Our motivation comes from the fact that we believe that this is an absolutely inappropriate approval and we have been left no choice but to seek justice based on the highest ideals of truth, moral responsibility, and love for Karawatha Forest and its neighbours. If you are able to help financially, and the amount is only what you may be able to afford, you would certainly help your Society’s case at this vital time
Donations can be made directly into the Karawatha Forest Protection Society account

On another matter, the search for an alternative site for the Environment Centre has advanced to the point where we have at least one good alternative site. This is not in Karawatha Forest but is still on the south side of Brisbane. We have been assaulted by misinformed opinions and exposed to personal fears driven purely by self- interest, as well as obstructionist efforts advocating sites which are of no value.
As joint partners in this project, we retain the right to our say in the outcome of this project. The announcement of the final site will be made at the appropriate time.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Society has had many achievements since it’s formation in 1991 when it was created as a social response to a need for green space on the south side of Brisbane. Community concern for the protection of bushland and its associated biodiversity reached a crescendo at a public meeting in 1991 when the Society came into being. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then but the need for community vigilance in protecting our natural areas has not diminished.
The stand down of the committee at this years meeting will see the departure of secretary Margaret Parkhill and treasurer Amy Wang. Margaret and Amy will not be re nominating for the new committee and these positions will be open to new, interested parties.
